What We Love

A relatively under-the-radar dial variant from the 3940 production run, and one I’ve personally documented appearing between movement numbers 770’644 and 771’342, accounting for roughly 700 examples, just over 50 more than the documented first series. As with all 3940 series estimates, the true production figure is lower, as movement was shared across simultaneous references such as the 3945.

Back to the watch itself, this early second series dial transitions to a beautifully warm opaline finish that I’ve always found particularly attractive. It retains the perfect symmetry between the 3 and 9 o’clock subdials, notably without the crosshair found in the 3 o’clock register on later variants. The dial here is immaculate and absolutely comes alive in natural sunlight.

The case is always a major talking point among 3940 collectors, largely due to the condition and sharpness of the hallmarks. This example has some of the best hallmarks I’ve personally seen, I’ll let the photographs speak for themselves. Overall, the watch is truly outstanding and one I’m very pleased to have in stock. It comes complete with its original pin buckle, correct ‘striped’ box set, original paperwork, the correct pin pusher, and a recent Patek Philippe service tag.

To me, the early second series remains one of the most interesting 3940 variants, subtle, easily overlooked, and only fully appreciated if you know exactly what to look for. I’m very excited to see where this one lands.

What You Should Know

There are light scratches around the lugs and minor hairlines throughout the case, though these are only really noticeable under close inspection with a loupe.
